ENGLISH VERSION: About the bear ... It is said that in 1211 AJ, during the medieval times, there were many bears in the woods around Madrid. The Romans called the area of Madrid "Ursaria". For these reason, it was decided that the bears would figure on the city armories. The tree on which the bear lies is an Arbutus Unido. There had been a fight between the church and the city of Madrid about a huge field around Madrid. The field contained both pasture and bushes. The fight was resolved by giving the pasture to the Church and the trees to the city. As a result, in 1222, the tree was added to the city armories. The monument of the Bear with the Arbutus Unido (Oso y el Madrono in Spanish) represents the bear and the tree. It was created in 1967 by the Culture department of the city council and can be seen in the center of Madrid. The seven stars around the bear and the tree represent the constellation Ursa Minor. Our logo is thus inspired by this story of the city of Madrid. We replaced the top of the tree by the SIGGRAPH logo and kept the original colors of the armorie of the village of Madrid. The colors of the inside of the SIGGRAPH logo are those of the Spanish flag.
